For any iPhone users in New Zealand, there was a full page advert in
yesterday's NZ Herald saying that Telecom will give user a $600 credit if
you move or sign-up your iPhone to the new XT network and you can keep the
same phone number. You may of course have to pay the early disconnection fee
from your Vodafone contract though.

Only by removing the SIM.

I think that is called Airplane Mode, if you have a second-generation
or later iPhone with built-in GPS.

From the App Store?
From a bootleg site?
Quicktime for MacOS? (not the same as for iPhone)

For anyone who may care -- I got into the iPhone Forum with the same
question and was told that it can't be done!! All downloads must be done
from iTunes and it' not there.

it's not a bluetooth limitation. it's at&t's idiocy, and will work once
the configuration is manually entered, on bluetooth or usb.

If we give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that means 720p, all
you need is a 3840x1440 screen. Heh.

Such things do exist. I doubt DTV has a device that can drive one.

Long before Sprint has WiMax all over, ATT will have 4G.

It's easier to borrow money for the build out when you are profitable.

Dont need a field replaceable battery now. I got a Mophie.

Why would I want to give a Moisture sensitive sticker a chance to see
the light of day?

Still do. I moved out here so my wife could be closer to her family.
Turned out to be a good idea job-wise too, since the economic climate in
SoCal sucks much less than the economic climate in NE Ohio.

Of course, you've still never offered even a single excuse for your lie.

I don't know about the at&t newsgroup, but you have no credibility
amongst the regulars here, and your dishonesty is a large part of the
reason why.

I don't expect you to ever admit you lied about staying away from this
newsgroup, either.

Of course, I'll also point out that after you switched from Sprint to
at&t... very soon after... you ranted about them too, and it was about
something stupid (retail store signage).

So what is your problem? When you waltz into this newsgroup and level
your smarmy little personal attacks at people, does it make you feel
better about yourself?

Do you even have the guts to admit that you have a problem?

Specifically, where on earth, and hopefully somewhere on AT&T's web
site, is the time period for night and weekend minutes listed? I do a
search for "night weekend minutes" and the only related answer is
about "anytime minutes" as if anyone needs to know that. I guess
there are some morons who need to know when "anytime minutes" can be
used. The only answer I could find was something about Rate Plan --
Details but that appears to be bad information.

The AT&T/SBC web site looks like a product of outsourcing.

--
By the way... Why do they use reverse notation for paths to
information?
"From the myWireless Account home page, select the View Details link
in the Rate Plan box."
They should list that as a path "Account Home Page -- Rate Plan Box
-- View Details Link".

The W880i is the light weighted phone and feels good to hold in on
hand. The Sony Ericsson W880i Mobile Phone has a compact but sharp
screen capable of showing 262K colours and 240x320 pixels. The screen
of this phone provides up to 262,000 colors on its high resolution
display. The Sony Ericsson W880i has a slim, eye-catching design. It
offers admirable call quality and a decent feature set including
Bluetooth, a Walkman player, and a 2-megapixel camera. This phone has
been provided with PUSH EMAIL so we can use the internet easily. Sony
Ericsson W880i Mobile Phone also has high quality music player and
video streaming. Available in two colour variations, black with dark
orange or brushed silver with black, Sony Ericsson's W880i is a
stunner. One player can find a button and fast-forward or backward can
play a tie, a random sequence of songs and create playlists. MegaBass
woomph in Sony function, the speakers play music to add a couple of
good headphones to hear the best sound quality. Most types of
connections are supported. Another Bluetooth mobile phone, computer,
stereo headsets and car hands-free Bluetooth function on your phone
can be linked. Speed USB ports are supported. Phone, Web browser, RSS
support in the Internet age is equipped with features and picture blog
feeds. Sony Ericsson W880i Mobile Phone takes great pictures in night
mode but careful slight movement when taking picture causes just huge
fuzz on the screen. Despite being just 9.4mm thin, Sony Ericsson have
managed to cram 3G, a 2 megapixel camera, great sounding Walkman music
player, and a cool 1GB of storage into the W880i. For more information

Such things do exist. I doubt DTV has a device that can drive one.

Long before Sprint has WiMax all over, ATT will have 4G.

It's easier to borrow money for the build out when you are profitable.

Your effusive rationalization and apologia for the iToy's lack of a
field replaceable battery and lack of durability makes me "immatrure"?
Whatever that is... You don't know, "jack". ROFLMAO

Dont need a field replaceable battery now. I got a Mophie.

Why would I want to give a Moisture sensitive sticker a chance to see
the light of day?

Still on my quest to get my Bluetooth GPS working with GpsMid on my
AT&T-branded SE W580i. I got the phone to find the GPS (thanks, John),
but when I try to get it connected to GpsMid (the mapping app), I get a
message about "connecting to BT not allowed". Further, I am not able to
set up any pointers to directories on my memory stick for storing
tracks, etc. because I get a "permissions not set" error.

I think I now understand (*despite* "help" from AT&T), that the problem
is that AT&T does not allow me to set Java privileges to my liking, even
though it's *my* phone, not theirs.

This seems to have something to do with AT&T wanting to retain control
of what Java apps I am allowed to run, by requiring "certificates" which
are far too expensive for open-source developers to obtain. This, of
course, makes for a cozy relationship with commercial vendors, by
cutting out any possible competition from the FOSS community.

I also think I understand that if I "debrand" the phone (restore it to a
generic SE W580i), AT&T's Java stupidity will no longer be a problem.

Does anyone know for sure that Java permissions can be user-set on an
unbranded, generic phone, even with "unauthorized" Java apps? I'd like
to know before I go to the trouble of debranding it.

Thanks

Isaac

I think you will find it not an AT&T/branding problem, but a J2ME
signing and/or permissions problem.

On the AT&T-branded Motorola RAZR V3xx, a similar problem (Internet
access) can be worked around with modifying ("modding").

It *is* an AT&T branding problem -- it's the way they have *chosen* to
handle J2ME permissions. Palm devices, for example, have no such problem
with Java apps. Users can adjust permissions to suit themselves.

And I'd still like to know about unbranded/debranded SE phones, if
anyone has any knowledge of them.

ATT dsl is no longer providing USENET service as of today,
but online I did this morning get an ATT credit card bill with my 10%
credit for ATT purchases last month.

$44

Cell Bill
POTS & dsl Bill
iPhone purchase @ ATT store
AppleCare purchase @ ATT store

After 3 1/2 weeks I still love my iPhone even more, it's just wonderful
to have GOOGLE in your pocket. Last weekend I got a Mophie JuicePack
Air.

The juice pack air is a rechargeable external battery concealed inside
of a protective form-fitting case for the iPhone 3G & iPhone 3G S. It
offers you the full protection of a hard-shell case while providing
virtually twice the battery life of the iPhone alone; all in an
ultra-thin, light-weight, low-profile design.

Your effusive rationalization and apologia for the iToy's lack of a
field replaceable battery and lack of durability makes me "immatrure"?
Whatever that is... You don't know, "jack". ROFLMAO

What does Sprint wireless have to do with AT&T DSL or AT&T Usenet
services? That's right, Bunky... nothing. I don't even know why this
thread is here, there are better newsgroups to post it to.

Besides, Todd isn't a Sprint apologist. I don't think he's ever used
Sprint... and only rarely have I heard him make any comments at all
about Sprint. So I don't know why you even bothered asking the question.

Seriously. Does someone pay you to snipe at people when they badmouth
AT&T? AT&T/SBC screwed me royally several years ago, or tried to (they
failed when I called the Ohio Public Utilities Commission and filed
complaints... after they insisted on trying to collect on $200 in
invoices for services that hadn't worked in two months.

As a result, I won't use AT&T for anything. Not wireless, not anything
else. Their wireless service may be stellar here in the Victor Valley,
but I will never find out.

For the record, I've never used Sprint, so I have neither a "revenge" nor
fanboi motive. As a disclaimer, I do own a whopping 200 shares of their
stock I bought at $3.50 for laughs. It's like Roulette. If the "wheel
of recovery" lands on Sprint, I win, if they go under, I'm out a few C-
notes. No big whoop.

You, and everyone else should have an interest in them staying afloat,
however, since the fewer strong competitors, can mean less choices and
higher prices.

Dont need a field replaceable battery now. I got a Mophie.

Why would I want to give a Moisture sensitive sticker a chance to see
the light of day?

I missed this I long ago plonked Koiby and his immature insults.

I wont miss USENET, thanks to clowns like Kirby, Allcl0ck and Sobel, the
noise to signal ratio is way too high.

If we give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that means 720p, all
you need is a 3840x1440 screen. Heh.

Such things do exist. I doubt DTV has a device that can drive one.

That's because I've been a fan since my late teens. Well, it's the
reason I recognized it; I don't know why I'm the first, though.

That's the point. Steve Jobs said in his 2005 commencement address at
Stanford:

"Your time is limited, so don¹t waste it living someone else¹s life.
Don¹t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other
people¹s thinking."

At issue is an _imaginary_ Apple tablet PC. Sounds like the guy in the
video who is doing your thinking for you wants to compete with John
Dvorak. "The iMac will fail." "The iPod will not sell. "Nobody will buy
an iPhone." Dvorak, at least, gets paid to troll. It has to be the
ultimate in laziness to point to someone else's troll--as you
did--rather than fabricate your own.

So exercise your creativity. Spend some time envisioning this
(non-existent device) and give us your own review of its (non-existent)
features and your own assessment as to why the (non-existent) device
will or will not sell. Skip over the part about it being crash-proof
and malware-proof; Maccies already know that the (non-existent) device
will be that.

it would be awfully clever malware if it could infect a device that did
not exist.

"Imaginary"?? Maybe, maybe not.

Your basic point is correct that Larry and his idiot cronies spouting
garbage about a device that they (and almost everyone else on the planet)
know nothing about is standard practice for them. They're simply brainless
morons.

BUT,
there are rumours about Apple soon releasing a netbook / tablet which is
basically a larger iPhone. The rumours have been around for quite a while,
but are gaining ground for a release just before or after Christmas with
Asian manufacturers reporting Apple's orders for device with a 9.5" touch
screen.

Until such a product is announced it remains imaginary. Conjecture,
guesswork, estimates, predictions--all involve trying to imagine
something that one has not seen, and that may not exist to be seen.
Thus, for now, an Apple tablet PC is an _imaginary_ device in my
lexicon.

Being unannounced doesn't make it "imaginary", simply unreleased. Imaginary
would imply the product doesn't exist at all. The actual product may well
exist within Apple's walls, even if only as a prototype. Apple has had many
unreleased products over the years, as well as many patents for ideas they
never make.

An unannounced Apple product has actually been showing up on website
statistics for a little while (due to testing), but I'm not sure if that was
the "iTablet" or the iPhone 3Gs.

"...may well exist..." The corollary is that it may well not exist. You

I am under the impression that applications can implement whatever
they like. Try searching for 'bluetooth' in iTunes.

I know that you are going to complain that, even if this is correct,
it does not mean that you can, for example, use a bluetooth keyboard
with the iPhone in general. You are right, and this is a perfectly
valid observation. However it is *not* true at all to say "The only
thing Bluetooth on iPhone does in the USA is headphones".

<shrug> My colleague uses his iPhone with his car's hands-free
bluetooth fine. I'd suggest that you can probably find on-line
complaints about pretty much any consumer you product you like,
it hardly proves anything.

It certainly sounds like this person should have done a tiny bit of
research before spending their money, yes. Also they should probably
read the manual and learn how to use their purchase.

Don't know what problem he's been having, but my iPhone works absolutely
fine with my Nokia CK7W Bluetooth car kit left over in the car from my
Nokia N95 days. The sound is crystal clear, through the speaker under
the dash, the radio-mute works perfectly, and I can use the new Voice
Control without even looking at the phone. I'm very happy with it.

Oh yes - it's the 3GS, but my previous 3G also worked perfectly apart
from not having voice control. The voice control is the main reason I
upgraded from the 3G to the 3GS.

That's odd. ATT supports DUN. If it had DUN, you guys would already be on

One of the things that amazes me - even though I love my iPhone - is
that the built-in Calendar app doesn't show the week view. It shows
day, month, or list. I'd suggest that most people use diaries/calendars
on a week-by-week basis, so this oversight is all the more senseless.

I really need the week view, which is what I use on my Macbook's iCal.
This gives much more of a sense of time, and where I have free time to
slot in meetings or whatever, than the list view does.

The app should also sync to the native iCal, rather than a third-party
calendar such as Google's Calendar, which I don't use.

Does anyone know of such an app? I've searched but so far
unsuccessfully.

Wonder if Apple would put that into an OS update? It would be
particularly useful in landscape mode, too.

AFAIK, the SDK doesn't allow much, if any, access to the native calendar,
which is why the PIM enhancement programs like Pocket Informant sync to
Google Calendar instead. (There is a Contacts API, however, so programs
can manipulate the phone book.) I suspect your hunt for third-party apps
that use the native calendar will come up dry...

I just got a Bluetooth GPS unit -- a BT-359 -- and it works just fine
with my Mac. I can't say the same, unfortunately, about my AT&T
Sony-Ericsson W580i.

The phone can pair with the GPS, and it shows up in the "My Devices"
listing, but no matter what I do, I can't get any of several Java
mapping apps to actually hook up to it. It never shows up in "Connected
Devices".

I've gotten some hints that either out of stupidity or malice, some (or
all???) AT&T phones have a broken driver of some sort that prevents the
hook-up.

If anybody has a working Bluetooth GPS setup, I'd really appreciate a
blow-by-blow description of what you did to get it working, and which
Java applet you're using.

I read one place that an "unlocked" phone would work; is that true?

Or alternately, if anyone can confirm that AT&T phones are broken,
that'd be good to know too.

Thanks

Isaac

The BlackBerry Bold is a beautiful phone. The new BlackBerry Bold 9000
is the successor to devices like the BlackBerry Curve and the 8800. It
has an excellent design. RIM's BlackBerry Bold 9000 is a quad-band GSM/
EDGE, tri-band UMTS candybar handset with a smooth, fretted QWERTY
thumb board. BlackBerry Bold is a 3G smartphone with quad-band GSM and
HSDPA support. The Bold is powered by an Intel PXA270 624MHz
processor, 128MB Flash memory and 1GB of ROM. The phone has also a
480×320 display, a 2 Megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom, and
SureType QWERTY keypad. The 2.0-megapixel camera includes some
advanced features, including a flash and 5X digital zoom. Bold comes
with a removable black leatherette cover that gives the phone a
classy, sophisticated look and makes the handset comfortable to hold.
The Bold 9000 is fairly large by BlackBerry standards. At 115mm x 67mm
x 15mm (4.5" x 2.6" x .6") in size and 139.1g (4.9oz) heavy, it is 1mm
wider and taller than even the BlackBerry 8800, and weighs a few grams
more as well. The included accessories are a headset, a data cable and
a battery charger. For more information visit-

Apple's App Store has eclipsed its rivals in terms of volume; its
users have downloaded more than 1.5 billion applications in about a
year.

The over-the-air program store has been a hit with consumers, and
this has made the platform attractive to mobile developers. Apple
said the store now has more than 65,000 apps, and more than 10,000
content creators are in its iPhone Developer Program. The store is
filled with programs that range from fake beer pouring apps to
enterprise-grade programs from Oracle and Salesforce.

With more than 1,000 new hooks into the hardware, the latest firmware
potentially opens the door for a new wave of, innovative apps.
Additionally, the 3.0 software creates new business models for
developers because it enables in-app purchasing, and app-specific
hardware accessories.

Thanks
